Public, private and homeschooled students will learn about life on the battlefield and the home front during Historic Zoar Village’s Civil War School Day on Friday, Sept. 14 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The cost is $5 per student, free for one adult per group, and $7 for additional adults. All teacher chaperones are free.

Families are welcome to the school day and one adult is free with every group of children. Register by 5 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 7 to get a discounted rate of $5 per child and $7 per extra adult. Registration is available up to Sept. 13 at 5 p.m. at a $1 increase per ticket. Call 330-874-3011 to register. Registration is required.

Students at Historic Zoar Village’s Civil War School Day on September 14 can meet with historical figures including John Parker, an African American abolitionist, inventor and industrialist. Parker was born into slavery and purchased his freedom, eventually settling in Ripley, Ohio, where he was a “conductor” along the Underground Railroad.

Interactive learning through demonstrations and hands-on activities

Students learn about Civil War artillery, cavalry, and infantry battle tactics from uniformed reenactors. Historic Zoar Village museum buildings provide a backdrop for life on the home front. Costumed historical interpreters at more than 20 activity stations share what life was really like for 1860s soldiers and civilians, with work demonstrations ranging from Civil War music to baking bread.

Period recreational activities will also be demonstrated, including children’s games and weaving.

Throughout the village, students can visit with several historical figures including:

  • U.S. President Abraham Lincoln
  • First Lady Mary Todd Lincoln
  • Abolitionist John Parker
  • Confederate President Jefferson Davis
  • Confederate General Robert E. Lee

Registration is required and can be completed by calling 330-874-3011.
