Two Local Family Days Not to Miss

Prehistoric Planting and Sheep to Shawl

By Emily Schloss May 9, 2018

The West Virginia Division of Culture and History has two local events planned to give your family enjoyable garden and agriculture experiences.

Join in the annual planting of the Interpretive Garden at the Grave Creek Mound Archaeological Complex on Saturday, May 19 and Saturday, June 2 from noon to 4 p.m.

Just as the prehistoric Native Americans did in this area, families will plant corn, beans, squash and several other plants. You can even try digging with a replica prehistoric garden hoe and take seeds home for planting your own garden.

The Grave Creek Mound Archaeological Complex is located at 801 Jefferson Avenue, Moundsville, WV. Call 304-843-4128 for more information. Inside activities are planned if it’s raining on planting days.

Don’t miss a great day of family entertainment at the Cockayne Farmstead in Glen Dale on Saturday, June 2 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., where you will enjoy a free day learning about the journey of wool from sheep to clothing at the Sheep to Shawl event.

Tour the 1850’s farmhouse, enjoy children’s activities, food, vendors and demonstrations. For more information call 304-845-1411. Cockayne Farmstead House is located at 1111 Wheeling Avenue, Glen Dale, WV.
